Hyundai Santa Fe 5th Generation Revealed - Photos

Sports utility vehicles (SUVs) and crossover utility vehicles (CUVs) have dominated the automotive market for almost a decade. These versatile vehicles continue to evolve, with new models being introduced globally every few months. Among the popular SUVs are three-row options that have gained significant popularity worldwide. Korean automakers have also made their mark in this segment, offering various models, including in Pakistan. Kia Pakistan provides the locally assembled Sorento, while Hyundai Pakistan imports the Hyundai Santa Fe, a discontinued third-generation model.

Hyundai Santa Fe: A Brief History

Santa Fe, a city in New Mexico, holds great significance for Hyundai as it lends its name to one of their most important SUVs. Introduced in 2000 as Hyundai's first-ever SUV, Santa Fe has been a successful model for the brand, achieving approximately 5.3 million global sales to date. Initially categorized as a compact SUV, Santa Fe has grown in size over the years and now targets the mid-size segment. Depending on the market, it is available in both two-row, five-seat, and three-row, seven-seat configurations.

The Upcoming Fifth Generation

Spy images of the prototype for the fifth-generation Santa Fe, codenamed MX5, have been circulating online for several months. Recently, Hyundai Global released the first official images of the upcoming model, although detailed information is expected to be unveiled in mid-August 2023.

Platform and Technical Sharing

The fifth-generation Santa Fe shares its platform with the Kia Sorento, known as the non-identical twin of the Hyundai model. Both vehicles have been developed using the same technical underpinnings. In 2018, when the fourth-generation Santa Fe was launched, it shared its Y-Platform with the third-generation Sorento, which is the currently available model in Pakistan.

Hyundai and Kia have been jointly developing a new modular platform to serve as the foundation for upcoming models from both brands. This platform offers improved rigidity, reduced weight, enhanced safety features, better fuel efficiency, and greater flexibility in accommodating various unibody crossovers, cars, and vans. Known as the Kia-Hyundai N-platform, it has been utilized by several new-generation models, including the Kia K5, Kia Carnival, Hyundai Staria, Tucson, and Sportage.

Exterior Design: Bold and Rugged

Hyundai has adopted a bold and unconventional design language in recent years, which has been well-received by customers. The fifth-generation Santa Fe follows suit with a radical transformation from its predecessor. The front features squared-off elements, horizontal lines, and new signature headlights with "H" DRLs (daytime running lights) connected by a light bar. The front bumper and grille contribute to its imposing and rugged appearance.

On the side profile, the vehicle maintains a horizontal theme, with semi-octagonal wide wheel arches, flat door panels, and square rear windows enhancing its ruggedness. The rear design showcases wide and large LED taillights shaped like the letter "H," creating a wider and taller tailgate for increased cargo capacity. The overall exterior design is attractive, unique, and evokes a sense of adventure.

Interior: Modern and Sophisticated

The fifth-generation Santa Fe boasts an all-new interior that continues the boxy design theme with horizontal and vertical lines. The dashboard layout features an all-new curved display, combining a 12.3-inch full HD driver instrument cluster with a 12.3-inch infotainment screen. The display is positioned lower for improved visibility and an open feel. The slim air vents and digital HVAC control enhance functionality, while the gear knob moves the steering column, creating additional storage space between the front seats.

Although detailed interior specifications have not been released, Hyundai is expected to offer rich features and cutting-edge technology. The model will be available in both two-row and three-row configurations, with fully foldable seats to provide ample interior space. The use of sustainable materials, such as recycled plastics for the suede headliner, mats, and seat backs, and eco-friendly leatherette for the door trim covers, aligns with Hyundai's commitment to sustainability. Additionally, soft-touch wood pattern garnish and Nappa leather seats add a touch of elegance to the interior design.

Mechanical Specifications and Variants

While specific mechanical details have not been disclosed, it is anticipated that the fifth-generation Santa Fe will inherit its engine lineup from the previous facelifted fourth generation. The available engines may include the 2.5L MPI, 2.5L GDI, and 2.5L Turbo GDI. However, the 3.5L V6 engine available in the previous model will likely be omitted. Hyundai is also expected to offer a 1.6L TGDI hybrid and a Plug-in Hybrid version, along with diesel options in certain markets. Various transmission options, including DCT, conventional automatic, and AWD, are also anticipated. The suspension, steering, braking, and overall driving dynamics are likely to be improved for an enhanced driving experience.

Release Date and Launch

The full official reveal of the fifth-generation Santa Fe is scheduled for August 18 and will be live-streamed on Hyundai's global official YouTube channel. The model is expected to be available for sale later this year as a 2024 model, with production initially taking place in Korea and the United States. The starting price in the United States is estimated to be around $30,000, while the top-of-the-line variant could reach approximately $45,000.

Prospects in the Pakistani Market

There have been rumors suggesting that Hyundai Pakistan may introduce the Santa Fe, potentially including a hybrid version. However, these rumors refer to the fourth-generation model, which has now been replaced by the new fifth-generation Santa Fe. While Hyundai Pakistan has already implemented the N3 platform used in Santa Fe's development, it would still require significant investment to bring the latest model to Pakistan. Considering the current economic conditions and market challenges faced by the automotive industry, the launch of a new model in Pakistan remains uncertain.
