Islamabad's Mega Projects Now Open to Heavy Traffic

The Chairman of the Capital Development Authority (CDA), Anwarul Haq, has issued immediate orders to reopen the Bhara Kahu bypass and Karnal Sher Khan Road, previously known as I.J. Principal Road, to heavy traffic.

Expressing dissatisfaction during a civic authority meeting over the closure of these projects to heavy traffic, the CDA chief emphasized the need for their accessibility. Notably, both these ventures incurred billions of rupees in costs.

The Bhara Kahu bypass, with additional ongoing work, is set to reach a substantial cost of 8 billion rupees. A consultant is currently assessing additional work, projected to require an additional Rs.1.5 billion.

Initially closed for technical reasons, the bypass faced closure due to its abrupt turns, posing a danger to fast-moving heavy vehicles. To address this, measures such as installing speed breakers, signboards, and deploying traffic police have been decided upon.

The directive from the CDA chief also includes opening Karnal Sher Khan Road to heavy traffic. The meeting disclosed that the closure of a flyover near Sabzi Mandi was due to landing issues on a regular road.

Heavy traffic, upon landing on the regular road, was occupying space designated for light traffic in flexible lanes instead of rigid lanes. The meeting identified encroachments on both sides of the road as the cause and decided to clear them.

Deliberations during the meeting extended to the progress of other projects, including the expansion of Park Road and a segment of the road from Sector D-12 to Sector E-11. It was reported that the D-12 to E-11 road would soon open for traffic as it approaches completion.
