Isuzu has made a groundbreaking announcement regarding its iconic D-Max pick-up, revealing plans for a battery electric vehicle (BEV) variant to complement its existing diesel lineup. Set to rival stalwarts like the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger, both offering mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid options worldwide, this electric truck is poised to redefine the segment.
Ian Able, Isuzu UK's Managing Director, expressed enthusiasm for the D-Max BEV, hailing it as a fusion of the D-Max's renowned toughness with cutting-edge electric technology. Positioned as a sustainable solution without compromising on performance or reliability, Isuzu's commitment to a carbon-neutral future is evident in this innovative offering tailored for the UK market.
Under the hood, the forthcoming electric D-Max will boast a 66.9kWh lithium-ion battery, generating 130kW of power. Equipped with dual electric motors on the front and rear axles, along with all-wheel drive capabilities, it promises a top speed of 81mph. While specific driving range details are pending, the truck will accommodate a payload of 1 ton and towing capacity of 3.5 tons, though slightly less than its diesel counterpart.
Isuzu's strategy involves a phased launch of the D-Max BEV across Europe next year, with subsequent expansion to markets like the UK and Australia, contingent upon demand and charging infrastructure development. The vehicle's design aims to deliver a smooth, vibration-free driving experience across various terrains, catering to both commercial and passenger needs.
Externally, the electric D-Max prototype exhibits subtle yet distinctive changes signaling its BEV status. Notable alterations include a bold, enlarged front grille accented with blue highlights and six-spoke alloy wheels, complementing the familiar body styling of its diesel counterpart while enhancing aerodynamic efficiency.
Isuzu's bold move to introduce an electric truck boasting impressive towing and payload capacities underscores its commitment to advancing electrification in the commercial sector. With anticipation mounting, the prospect of the electric D-Max arriving in markets like Pakistan holds promise for ushering in a new era of sustainable transportation.
