Lahore Enforces Ban on Smoke-Releasing Vehicles
The Punjab government has implemented a sweeping ban to restrict the entry of vehicles emitting smoke and equipped with pressure horns into the city of Lahore. This decisive action comes into effect as of October 11, aligning with directives from the Caretaker Punjab Chief Minister, Mohsin Naqvi, and the Inspector General of Police Punjab, Dr. Usman Anwar.
A Collaborative Effort to Tackle Alarming Smog Levels
This initiative, executed in partnership with the Environmental Protection Agency, is part of a concerted effort to combat the dire smog crisis plaguing the provincial capital. Inspector General Punjab has additionally mandated the issuance of certificates for unfit vehicles and deployed motor vehicle examiners as needed, underlining their commitment to reducing emissions and improving air quality.
Stringent Measures to Address Smog Pollution
To address the critical issue of smog in Lahore, the administration has invoked section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code. Notably, the burning of stubble in agricultural fields across all districts in the Lahore division has been officially prohibited. In addition to this, tractor-trolleys carrying sand and other materials without proper cover are also barred from entering the city. These steps reflect the authorities' dedication to taking strong measures to combat smog.
Potential Changes to Daily Life in Lahore
In a bid to further mitigate the smog problem, the government is considering the closure of schools, markets, and factories every Wednesday. Moreover, government departments may operate with only half their usual workforce as part of the proposed measures. These potential adjustments in daily life aim to reduce emissions and improve air quality in the long term.
Rawalpindi Joins the Fight Against Harmful Emissions
Meanwhile, Rawalpindi City Traffic Police is also stepping up efforts to combat pollution. Vehicles emitting harmful smoke will face stringent action, including being banned from entering the city and substantial fines. This coordinated approach underscores the government's determination to address the pervasive issue of air pollution in the region.
