Lahore-Islamabad Motorway Toll Jumps to Rs. 600

The National Highway Authority (NHA) has announced a 10% annual increase in toll tax on the Lahore-Islamabad (M2) Motorway, effective from August 20, 2024. This increase is part of a 20-year agreement between the NHA and MS/More, a subsidiary of the Frontier Works Organization (FWO). The agreement, signed in 2014, aims to modernize and maintain the M2 Motorway under a Build Operate Transfer (BOT) model.

Toll Hike Details
As per the Concessions Agreement, a 10% yearly toll increase will be implemented from the second operational year until 2026. Following this, a 7% yearly increase will be applied from 2026 to 2034. These hikes are designed to fund the ongoing modernization and upkeep of the motorway, ensuring a smooth travel experience for all commuters.

New Toll Rates
With the recent increase, the toll rate for cars on the M2 Motorway has gone up from Rs. 3.07 to Rs. 3.39 per kilometer. This adjustment reflects the annual toll tax hike mandated by the agreement, which is crucial for maintaining the motorway's infrastructure and services.

Toll Tax Increases on Other Highways
In addition to the M2 Motorway, the NHA has also raised toll taxes on other highways and motorways, effective from July 1, 2024. The revised rates apply to national highways, the Kohat Tunnel, and motorways such as M-1, M-3, M-4, M-5, and E-35. These adjustments are part of the same agreement with FWO.

Tackling Challenges on the Motorway
Despite its significance as a major revenue source, the Lahore-Islamabad Motorway continues to face various issues, including inadequate medical facilities and frequent reports of fraudulent activities. A recent tragic event, where a family reportedly died after consuming expired food bought on the motorway, has brought these concerns to light. It is crucial for the authorities to take immediate action to resolve these problems and enhance the overall safety and security of travelers on this vital route.
