Lucid Motors Aims to Enter Right-Hand-Drive Markets

Lucid Motors Aims to Enter Right-Hand-Drive Markets
Lucid Motors, the American electric carmaker, has ambitious plans to develop direct competitors to Tesla's popular Model 3 and Model Y vehicles. These new models will even include right-hand-drive (RHD) variants to cater to specific markets.

The company is currently focused on the upcoming launch of its Gravity SUV, scheduled for the second half of next year. Following this formal debut, Lucid will proceed with the release of the two new vehicles aimed at rivaling Tesla's offerings.
According to Lucid's CEO, Peter Rawlinson
❝“After Gravity, we’re going to do Model 3 and Model Y competitors. We think they will be priced around US$50,000 or something like that. It’s too early to say, but that’s the vision.”
Despite Lucid Motors' keen interest in tapping into right-hand-drive markets, the company faces certain engineering priorities that need to be addressed. As a result, Lucid might consider outsourcing the RHD model projects to an external engineering firm.
Rawlinson said:
❝“It breaks my heart, maybe we can outsource the right-hand drive project to an engineering company to do it for us. The potential market in the UK isprobably bigger than even Germany in terms of a latent desire to go EV.”
Apart from its existing lineup, Lucid Motors plans to expand its influence in the electric vehicle market by licensing its technology. Recently, Lucid and Aston Martin reached an agreement where they exchanged US$232 million in shares and cash for electric vehicle powertrain components. These components will be utilized to manufacture upcoming Aston Martin electric hypercars, sports cars, GTs, and SUVs. The first of these vehicles is expected to make its debut in 2025. This collaboration aims to create a multiplier effect in the industry, promoting the adoption of electric vehicles.

According to Rawlinson, the most significant impact on mass-market electric vehicles will come from smaller battery packs. He envisions achieving an impressive efficiency rate of 9.6 kilometers per kilowatt-hour (kWh). In his vision of the future, electric cars will only require a range of around 250 miles (400 km), and the need for 500-mile (800 km) capable vehicles will diminish in the next 10 years.
❝“Now is Lucid going to make that? No. It’s a horrible thing to be making. But could we be the ‘intel inside’ for that car? The enabler? Absolutely. And that’s where we could get the multiplier effect.”
