Mercedes Introduces Updated G-Class Models
Mercedes-Benz has introduced a revised version of its iconic G-Class, maintaining its classic appearance while implementing significant changes beneath the surface. One notable adjustment is the replacement of the V8 engine in the G550 with a more efficient inline-six, reflecting the brand's commitment to improving fuel efficiency and meeting stringent emissions standards, particularly in the European market.
Enhanced Diesel Powertrain
In Europe, the diesel variant receives an upgrade, transitioning from the old G400d to the new G450d model. This updated version features a refined 3.0-liter inline-six turbodiesel engine, delivering an impressive output of 362 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. Compared to its predecessor, the G450d boasts a substantial increase of 36 horsepower and 37 pound-feet of torque. Furthermore, it incorporates a mild-hybrid system, providing an additional temporary boost of 20 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque.
Improved Performance
The performance enhancements are evident as the new G450d accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in just 5.8 seconds, significantly quicker than the previous model's 6.4 seconds. Despite this boost in acceleration, the top speed remains unchanged at 130 mph. While the G450d falls short in horsepower compared to the G550, it compensates with significantly higher torque, resulting in a mere half-second difference in sprint time between the two models.
Future Innovations
Mercedes-Benz's refresh of the G-Class lineup doesn't end here, with plans for a fully electric variant expected to debut later this year. This forthcoming electric model is anticipated to forego the "EQ" branding. Additionally, in the Chinese market, the G-Class is available with a four-cylinder gasoline engine, known as the G350, boasting 255 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. Despite the availability of plug-in hybrid setups across various Mercedes models, a plug-in hybrid variant of the G-Class is currently not on the agenda.
In conclusion, Mercedes-Benz continues to evolve the G-Class, blending iconic design with innovative technologies to meet the demands of modern drivers while preserving the rugged spirit of this legendary off-roader.
