MG ES5 EV Launches With 500 KM Range

SAIC Motors has officially launched the MG ES5, a pure-electric compact SUV designed to be family-friendly. The ES5 comes with three range options: 425 km, 515 km, and 525 km, catering to different driving needs. Previously known as the “S5,” it has been rebranded as the “ES5” and is expected to be priced between 100,000 and 150,000 yuan (Rs. 3.9 million to Rs. 5.85 million) in China. The market launch is planned for later this year, and the model has already been spotted in Europe, hinting at global export plans.

Built on SAIC's Nebula Platform
The MG ES5 is built on SAIC’s Nebula pure-electric platform, featuring a five-link rear suspension system for enhanced ride comfort. It measures 4476 mm in length, 1849 mm in width, and 1621 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2730 mm, making it compact yet spacious. The SUV comes in two weight variants—1685 kg and 1740 kg—depending on the battery size. Additionally, the interior offers a maximum usable space of 4.24 square meters, making it practical for families.

Modern Exterior Design
The exterior design of the MG ES5 stands out with its sleek, closed-off front fascia, sharp narrow headlights, and split lower grilles. It also features traditional door handles, blacked-out side mirrors, silver roof racks, and Y-shaped tail lights for a modern look. The ES5 offers two rim sizes, 17 inches and 18 inches, giving buyers some customization options. Overall, the design emphasizes both style and functionality.

Powerful Electric Performance
Powering the MG ES5 is a rear electric motor producing 125 kW (168 hp) and 250 Nm of torque. The SUV can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 8 seconds, with a top speed of 170 km/h. It uses lithium iron phosphate battery packs supplied by the CATL-SAIC joint venture, available in either 49.1 kWh or 62.2 kWh capacities. These batteries provide CLTC driving ranges of 425 km, 515 km, and 525 km, though real-world range is slightly lower. The battery pack is also notable for being only 110 mm thick, the world’s thinnest.

Tech-Enhanced Interior
Inside, the MG ES5 features a modern cabin with a central control screen, an instrument panel, and a flat-bottom steering wheel. While screen sizes haven't been disclosed, the center console has a hollow design for extra storage, including two cupholders and wireless charging capabilities. The vehicle is equipped with a panoramic sunroof, enhancing the sense of spaciousness inside. With its combination of design, performance, and technology, the MG ES5 is poised to make a mark in the electric SUV market.
