New Safety Features Must Add in New Pakistani Cars
The federal cabinet accorded the approval of the Automotive Industry Development and Export Plan (AIDEP) 2021-2026 on 21 December 2021. The implementation of new auto policy is considered as a positive development in this sector as various clauses are included in this policy that favor automotive industry and they ensure the safety of driver and passenger.
Various incentives are offered and the rules, which are implemented on the industry, are designed to ensure provision of maximum benefits to the end users. There are different financial and tax reliefs, which are offered to the car manufacturing companies, are almost same and there are some additions, which are proposed in AIDEP 2021-26, that are the outcomes of various changes.
Various clauses are introduced and the main clause is to abide by World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations (SP.29), which is part of the auto makers. United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) has developed the regulations and 64 countries follow them. The WP.29 was introduced in Pakistan in April 2020 and the application of this clause ‘across the board’ is yet to be implemented. In the latest policy, some of UN regulations have become compulsory for all automakers, which are operating in Pakistan.

R 94, R 95 & R 135 | Cars and Vans | Dictates the safety standards for the vehicle occupants in case of frontal, lateral, and rear collisions. |
R 121 & R 114 | Cars and Vans | Ensures the incorporation of replaceable airbags as well as tests the functionality and reliability of the system. |
R 43 | Cars and Vans | Mandates safety glazing (especially for the windshields) in all vehicles, while also incorporating clauses for placement of glass in vehicles for maximum safety. |
R 46 | Cars, Vans, Commercial Vehicles, and Buses | The rearview mirrors’ design, placement, fit, the field of vision that they offer, etc. needs to be up to a certain standard. |
R 116 | Cars, Vans, Commercial Vehicles, and Buses | The anti-theft equipment in vehicles such as the immobilization system, theft alarm, and other features to prevent unauthorized use of vehicles are a must. |

According to the new policy, it is compulsory for car companies to comply with these clauses so that their cars can qualify as the selling products for the people. The implementation of these regulations will take some time but it is considered as a right step to provide safety to the people. These regulations will create the massive shift in quality standards of the locally produced cars and their desirability and it will be beneficial for car makers and consumers.
