NHA to Introduces Helicopter Rescue Service for Motorways
Following the recent toll tax hikes on national highways and motorways, the National Highway Authority (NHA) has rolled out a significant initiative aimed at improving emergency response times for road accident victims. The NHA is considering the deployment of helicopter rescue services to aid in providing faster medical assistance on motorways, ensuring timely help for injured individuals.
Faster Response with Helicopters
According to Abdul Aleem Khan, the minister responsible for overseeing road infrastructure, this new move is intended to strengthen road safety measures. He explained that Helicopters could provide swift access to vehicles fire sites or accident scenes., especially in areas where road ambulances face delays due to difficult terrain or traffic. This initiative aims to minimize fatalities and serious injuries by cutting down on the time it takes for victims to receive medical care.
In conjunction with this, the NHA plans to introduce a system of daily accident reporting, which will help in identifying dangerous zones and making necessary improvements to enhance road safety. This will also contribute to a longer-term vision of upgrading the infrastructure over the next five years, making travel safer for all.
Funding for Safer Roads
To further improve the road network, the minister highlighted the need for new revenue streams that can fund these safety measures. He stressed that the toll fees and other charges collected from road users should be reinvested into projects that enhance the overall safety and quality of the roads.
July 2024 Toll Tax Revisions
In July 2024, the National Highway Authority implemented an annual adjustment to toll taxes, which became effective from July 1, 2024. These updated rates apply to various routes, including the Kohat Tunnel (N-55), Islamabad-Peshawar Motorway (M-1), Lahore-Abdul Hakeem Motorway (M-3), Pindi Bhattian-Faisalabad-Multan Motorway (M-4), Multan-Sukkur Motorway (M-5), and the Hakla-Havelian-Mansehra Expressway (E-35).
