No Helmet, No Ride: Lahore's New Road Policy
Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz is taking extensive measures to improve road safety across the province. The Punjab government is utilizing all available resources, including providing relief for drivers with expired licenses and implementing advanced technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) to reduce traffic violations. The aim is to ensure that motorcycle riders and motorists strictly follow traffic regulations, making the roads safer for everyone.
Helmet-Only Zones in Lahore
In a recent move, several key roads in Lahore have been designated as Helmet-Only zones. According to the traffic police, motorcyclists without helmets are no longer allowed to travel on major roads such as Jail Road, Mall Road, Ferozepur Road, Canal Roads, and Maulana Shaukat Ali Road. Additionally, routes in Cantt are also restricted for helmetless riders, further strengthening road safety measures in the city.
AI Integration for Traffic Enforcement
Chief Traffic Officer Ammara Athar has instructed traffic authorities to take strict action against helmet violations. To enhance enforcement, the authorities have introduced an AI system that operates alongside manual monitoring. Recent reports indicate that AI detected 202,957 traffic violations, while manual enforcement resulted in 249,684 challans, demonstrating the effectiveness of combining technology with traditional methods.
AI-Based E-Challans Introduced
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced the launch of AI-based e-challans as part of the government's efforts to modernize traffic management. This system is a significant step toward a more technologically advanced Punjab, aiming to improve governance and road safety. Cameras are also being used to monitor traffic wardens, promoting discipline and ensuring that the new system operates smoothly.
Digital Traffic Initiatives
In addition to AI-based e-challans, the Punjab government has introduced other digital initiatives like e-vehicle registrations. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to digitalize traffic management and improve compliance with road regulations. The steps taken by the government are seen as progressive and aim to create a safer and more organized travel experience. Do you think these measures will be productive?
