Postponed Driving License Fee Increase - New Date Announced!

In a positive development for the residents of Punjab, caretaker Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi has announced a significant relief on the first day of 2024. The proposed increase in driving license fees, scheduled to take effect from January 1, 2024, has been postponed. This decision provides citizens with an extended deadline until January 9, offering them an opportunity to obtain their licenses at the current fee structure.

Temporary Reprieve from Steep Fee Hike

The Punjab government, in December 2023, initially announced a substantial increase in driving license fees for both cars and motorcycles. The fee for obtaining a driver’s license witnessed a staggering 1566% rise, from Rs. 60 to Rs. 1000. However, Chief Minister Naqvi's recent announcement of a reprieve comes as a welcome relief for the public.

Annual Fee Revision for Driving Licenses

Recently, the Punjab government declared an increase in annual fees for learners, renewals, and New Driving Licenses, effective from January 1, 2024. According to information from the Lahore City Traffic Police’s Twitter handle, the fee will now be collected on an annual basis instead of the previous five-year cycle. This move follows a strict crackdown by the traffic police against drivers without licenses in Lahore and other cities of Punjab.

Record Number of License Applications Amidst Police Operation

The recent operation by the police, initiated after a tragic car accident caused by a teenage driver resulting in the death of six family members, has led to a record-high number of people applying for learner and Driving License Tests in the past few months. On December 5, the police reported issuing 74,000 Learner Permits in a single day in Punjab, with the provincial capital issuing a significant 24,000 licenses, indicating a notable increase in adherence to licensing requirements.
