Proton X90 Hybrid Debuts in South Africa
Malaysian automaker Proton has officially launched the flagship X90 7-seater SUV in the South African market, marking its entry as the first 7-seat hybrid SUV available in the right-hand-drive segment.
Expanding Proton's Presence
Proton's journey in South Africa continues with the introduction of its fourth model, the X90, following the successful launches of the X50, X70, and Saga since their return to the market in September 2022 after a decade-long hiatus.
Variants and Pricing
The Proton X90 arrives in South Africa with four distinct variants: Standard, Executive, Premium, and Flagship, each catering to different preferences. The pricing structure for these variants is as follows:
Standard– ZAR 559,900 (PKR 91.13 lac)
Executive – ZAR 589,900 (PKR 96.02 lac)
Premium – ZAR 644,900 (PKR 104.97 lac)
Flagship – ZAR 679,900 (PKR 109.85 lac)

Elevated Features Across the Board
The X90 sets a high standard by incorporating an array of standard features across all trim levels. Even the base model boasts 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, daytime running lights, LED fog lamps, and more.
Interior Comforts and Connectivity
Inside, the X90 boasts a leather multifunction steering wheel, automatic dual-zone climate control, cruise control, keyless entry and start, and comfortable fabric seats. The 12.3-inch infotainment screen offers voice commands, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity, and a 6-speaker audio system.
Safety and Enhanced Experience
Safety is paramount in the X90, featuring an impressive 14 passive safety features, including automatic parking and road sign recognition. Upgrading to the Executive trim level unlocks additional amenities such as automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, a powered tailboard, leatherette upholstery, and a wireless charger.

Premium and Flagship Luxury
The Premium trim introduces 19-inch alloy wheels, hands-free electric tailgate, Nappa leather steering wheel and seats, lumbar support, front seat ventilation, and advanced safety features including autonomous emergency braking and adaptive cruise control. The flagship Flagship variant adds a panoramic sunroof for an enhanced cabin experience.
Efficient Powertrain and Performance
Under the hood, the Proton X90 houses a 1.5L TGDi engine combined with a 48V electric motor, delivering a total output of 130 kW and 255 Nm. This setup offers benefits such as improved fuel efficiency, reduced emissions, enhanced performance, and a smoother drive. A 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (DCT) with multiple driving modes complements the powertrain.

Proton's Situation in Pakistan
While Proton has made significant strides in South Africa, its presence in Pakistan has been marked by challenges. Despite introducing the X70 and Saga, the brand has struggled to deliver units to customers, leading to notable price hikes. Consumers in Pakistan have expressed frustration over the brand's performance in terms of launches and deliveries.
