Punjab Govt Launches AI-Based E-Challan System

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz recently announced on social media that the provincial government has begun using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to address traffic violations. In her post, she highlighted that the AI-based e-challans are part of a broader initiative to modernize Punjab through advanced technology, aiming to improve governance and efficiency.

AI to Enhance Road Safety
The AI system is designed to make roads safer by targeting various traffic violations. The government has emphasized the importance of this initiative in curbing traffic offenses and improving road safety for motorists throughout the province.

Traffic Violations Monitored by AI
The AI-based detection system will monitor and penalize a range of traffic violations, including running red lights, wrong-way driving, triple riding, tinted windows, and zebra crossing violations. Other offenses include over-speeding, excessive smoke emission, one-wheeling, seatbelt negligence, and illegal parking, among others.

Traffic Police Crackdown
As part of this new initiative, Lahore Traffic Police has formed specialized teams to apprehend vehicles involved in these violations. The ongoing crackdown in the city aims to enforce the law strictly and ensure compliance with the new AI-driven system.

Monitoring and Future Projects
Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Amara Athar stated that the cameras used for e-challans are also monitoring traffic wardens to ensure safe and disciplined travel. She highlighted that this is the first time in South Asia that such an advanced AI system is being used for 19 specific traffic violations. The Punjab government has also launched other digital projects, such as e-vehicle registrations, to further streamline the system for citizens.
