Punjab Police Fines 19K Young Drivers in a Week

In response to a tragic car incident claiming multiple lives within a Lahore upscale locality, authorities in Punjab have heightened their efforts to address the issue of underage drivers. The Punjab police spokesperson released data on the ongoing crackdown, revealing that over 19,000 underage drivers were fined in the past week throughout the province.

Throughout the current year, a staggering 81,000 fines were issued to underage drivers, and more than 2,100 cases were formally registered against them. In addition to the fines, 3,500 vehicles were impounded across various police stations in the province. The Inspector General (IG) Punjab issued a stern warning to parents, cautioning them against allowing individuals under the age of 18 to operate vehicles.

To reinforce these measures, Regional Police Officers (RPOs), District Police Officers (DPOs), and officers from the District Traffic Police have been instructed to intensify their efforts in cracking down on underage driving. This directive follows a Lahore High Court (LHC) order mandating the arrest of individuals found driving without a valid license.

The LHC, during the hearing of a case involving an underage driver who caused the death of six family members, emphasized the need for indiscriminate action. The court asserted that driving without a license is akin to providing someone with a potentially lethal weapon, underscoring the seriousness of the matter.
