Punjab Police Investing in Hundreds of Electric Bikes

Punjab police have strategically opted to acquire hundreds of electric bikes as a proactive response to the prevailing fuel shortage, aiming to alleviate operational challenges and generate substantial savings in fuel expenditures annually.

The decision materialized in the aftermath of a recent fuel crisis that severely impeded the police's activities throughout the province. Dr. Usman Anwar, the Inspector General (IG) of Punjab Police, officially confirmed this pivotal move during an interview with a local media outlet.

IG Punjab shared insights into his proactive approach, revealing that he had apprised Caretaker Chief Minister Punjab, Mohsin Naqvi, about the dire fuel scarcity confronting his department. While Naqvi assured the release of necessary funds for conventional fuel purchases, he concurrently suggested the adoption of electric vehicles within the provincial police force.

In response to the Chief Minister's recommendation, IG Punjab disclosed the decision to procure 200 electric bikes, underscoring the allocation of Rs. 30 million in funds to facilitate this transition.

It is noteworthy that the Punjab police currently grapples with a severe fuel shortage, with thousands of its vehicles teetering on the brink of depletion. The crisis unfolded following the caretaker government's decision to substantially curtail the budget designated for petrol, oil, and lubricants (POL), compounded by an extension of the fiscal year's quarter period by an additional month.
