Qingqi Rickshaw Ban: Punjab Issues 30-Day Warning to Owners

The caretaker provincial government of Punjab has implemented stringent measures against Qingqi rickshaws, extending the ban to cover the entire province, including the city of Lahore. Ibrahim Hassan Murad, the Caretaker Provincial Minister of Punjab for Transport, Livestock, and Mines & Minerals, disclosed that a 30-day warning period has been issued to the owners of these rickshaws.

Following the conclusion of this grace period, the provincial authorities will initiate a crackdown, targeting not only the operation of Qingqi rickshaws but also illegal manufacturing practices related to motorcycle and loader rickshaws. Furthermore, a decision has been made to prohibit all rickshaws in major cities lacking approval from the transport department. The government plans to extend its crackdown to small cities and rural areas in the subsequent phase.

Chief Secretary Punjab, Zahid Akhtar Zaman, had previously announced a ban on the manufacturing and sale of new Qingqi rickshaws. Notably, the caretaker CM Punjab introduced a 30-day free registration period for Qingqi rickshaws, emphasizing that a significant portion, approximately 95%, of these vehicles across Punjab remain unregistered, lacking fitness certificates, thereby contributing to environmental pollution.
