Self-Driving Feature in Tesla Mass Car Crash
Tesla is the auto giant, which has introduced the full self-driving feature in 2022 and this feature is considered as Auto-pilot feature. The owner of Tesla used this feature when the car stopped on the highway suddenly and it caused a crash of 8 cars and 9 people were injured in this accident. According to the reports, this accident occurred on 24 November 2022, when a Tesla car was passing through the tunnel in San Francisco. The car changed lanes suddenly and it stopped in front of the car, which was coming right behind it. The back car was struck by the front car and the cars coming behind these two cars at high speed, could not control their speed and they also hit them, which caused injuries to 9 people. In this whole accident, total 8 cars were struck right behind one after the other.
When the driver of the Tesla was asked about the cause of the sudden stoppage of the car, he claimed that his car was driven in Full Self-Drive (FSD) mode. It allows Tesla to automatically change lanes, enter and exit highways, recognize stop signs and traffic lights, and park. This feature is being used in the beta tests and it must be supervised by licensed drivers.
The security footage of the car shows that Tesla entered the tunnel and suddenly moved into left lane with blinks on and it a standstill in front of the car, which was coming right behind it.
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) revealed 41 investigations on 22 December 2022 as these accidents were caused by the use of automated features in Tesla. The Full Self Driving (FSD) software of Tesla is being scrutinized for its performance. The beta testers shared their experience with the software on YouTube and they highlighted various issues with this software. It is ranged from the tendency to the system to push the brakes of the car randomly to attempt to steer into the wrong lane and this software seems unable to detect pedestrians on the road. It is worth mentioning that FSD is in beta and it has not been released to the public to use as the performance of this software is not verified.
