The Vision of an Electric Toyota Land Cruiser

The Vision of an Electric Toyota Land Cruiser
Like a magician pulling a rabbit out of a hat, Toyota surprised us all at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show a couple of weeks ago by unveiling the electric Land Cruiser Se. However, since then, there has been little discussion about this zero-emission SUV. This unofficial rendering attempts to fill the gaps, providing a speculative digital design exercise that envisions the probable future of an LC without a combustion engine.
Design Tweaks and Realistic Touches
Typical for a concept, the Land Cruiser Se initially featured side cameras, but this rendering reveals a shift to traditional mirrors. In an effort to tone down the show car from Tokyo, the artist incorporated regular door handles, making it more aligned with what one would expect from a production vehicle. Additional changes, such as the inclusion of red reflectors at the back, aim to enhance its believability as a potential Toyota sales model.

The Electric Land Cruiser's Ambiguous Future
Despite the buzz, Toyota has not provided a specific timeframe for the release of an electric Land Cruiser. Few details were shared about the Se, aside from its monocoque structure and interior accommodating up to seven passengers. The imposing three-row EV concept boasted impressive dimensions—5150 mm (202.7 inches) long, 1990 mm (78.3 in) wide, and 1705 mm (67.1 in) tall, with a wheelbase of 3050 mm (120 in).

Comparing Dimensions with the LC300 and LC250
The boxy design of the Land Cruiser Se makes it longer than the LC300, yet shares the same width. Interestingly, the LC300, which Toyota does not sell in the United States, is notably taller. However, the U.S. market does receive the LC250 Land Cruiser (known as the Prado in other regions), a slightly smaller variant of the renowned SUV.
Unique Construction and Electric Drivetrain Insights
The Land Cruiser Se's unibody construction sets it apart from the traditional fossil fuel-burning SUVs in the lineup. While details about the electric drivetrain are scant, Toyota vaguely mentions "high-torque driving performance." The press release hints at "highly responsive handling and confidence in tackling rough terrain," suggesting an all-wheel-drive configuration with electric motors at the front and rear.

Distant Production Prospects
While logic suggests a production version may not materialize soon, it's worth noting that at the same Japan Mobility Show, Toyota introduced the FT-Se, an electric sports car scheduled for no earlier than 2027. This timeframe raises questions about when we might see an electric Land Cruiser on the roads.
