Toyota Issues Recall for Prius Hybrids Due to Safety Risk

Toyota Motors has initiated a recall affecting over 135,000 Prius hybrid automobiles in Japan, prompted by concerns regarding the rear door handles. This decision follows a disclosure from the transport ministry indicating that the impacted vehicles were produced between November 2022 and April 2024. Fortunately, there have been no reported accidents attributed to this malfunction thus far.

Production Halts Amidst Safety Concerns
In response to the issue, Toyota has declared a suspension of production activities and ceased accepting orders from dealerships until a resolution is reached. The transport ministry identified the root cause as inadequate waterproofing in the electronic components of the rear doors. Exposure to moisture can result in short-circuiting, potentially causing unintended door openings during vehicle operation. Although incidents have not occurred, Toyota views it as crucial to promptly address this deficiency to ensure safety.

Swift Corrective Actions Undertaken
To remedy the situation, the Japanese automaker has implemented a temporary production halt and paused order placements from dealerships until the problem is rectified. While the recall focuses on Prius vehicles in Japan, it remains uncertain if similar actions will extend to Prius models sold abroad. Nonetheless, Toyota has announced the resumption of Corolla compact car production on Thursday, following the suspension of an assembly line for Prius quality checks.

Supplier Discloses Source of Issue
A key supplier to Toyota, Tokai Rika Co, disclosed that the problem originated from door switches in Prius cars. The company estimates potential costs of around 11 billion yen (Rs. 19,707,477,100) due to the recall.
