Toyota Launches the Crown Sport PHEV in Japan

Toyota has officially introduced the Crown Sport PHEV in Japan, expanding its lineup with the new plug-in hybrid variant. This addition comes after the successful release of the standard hybrid variant in October of the same year. The Toyota Crown Sport PHEV 2024 is priced at 7.65 million yen (RM249,777), marking a notable increase from the hybrid variant, which is available at 5.9 million yen (RM192,638).

Powertrain Specifications

Sharing the 2.5L naturally-aspirated petrol engine with the hybrid version, the Crown Sport PHEV features the A25A-FXS unit with a slightly reduced output of 174 hp (130 kW) and 219 Nm. Notably, the range-topping Crown Sport Variant incorporates a more powerful front electric motor, the 5NM, contributing 180 hp (134 kW) and 270 Nm, compared to the hybrid's 3NM electric motor with 118 hp (88 kW) and 202 Nm. The addition of a separate rear electric motor – the 4NM – brings the Crown Sport PHEV's maximum system output to 302 hp (225 kW), transmitted through the E-Four all-wheel-drive system.

Battery Technology and Range

Diverging in battery specifications, the hybrid employs a nickel–metal hydride battery with a 5 Ah capacity, while the Crown Sport PHEV adopts a lithium-ion battery with a larger 51 Ah capacity. Toyota claims the PHEV offers up to 90 km of fully electric driving. The automaker also emphasizes a fuel economy of 20.3 km/l and a total cruising range of 1,200 km in hybrid mode, supported by a 55-liter fuel tank.

Charging Capabilities & Innovative Features

The Crown Sport PHEV supports standard charging, with a full charge taking 5.5 hours (200 V/16 A) or 3.5 hours (200 V/30 A). Fast charging is also available, allowing an 80% charge in 38 minutes. Owners can engage with the infotainment and air conditioning systems while the vehicle is charging through the "My Room Mode." The 1.5 kW external power source enables the charging of additional accessories or devices. Moreover, the vehicle-to-home (V2H) function can power a home, providing approximately 6.5 days of electricity with a full battery charge and tank of gas, based on a daily power consumption of 10 kWh (400 W per hour) for an average household.
