Toyota Unveils First Hydrogen-Powered Hilux Prototype

Toyota has introduced its groundbreaking Hilux hydrogen fuel cell prototype in England, marking a significant milestone in clean energy transportation. Manufactured at Toyota's Burnaston vehicle plant in Derby, this innovative hydrogen-powered Hilux is the result of a collaborative effort supported by funding from the UK government and consortium partners.

Utilizing components from the Toyota Mirai, the Hilux's powertrain enables an impressive range of up to 365 miles (587 km) between hydrogen refills, as confirmed by the automaker. Toyota has ambitious plans to produce a total of 10 such prototypes by the end of this year.

Images of the prototype reveal the hydrogen tanks neatly situated in the space typically occupied by the cabin between the frame rails. Under the hood, traditionally reserved for a combustion engine, houses the additional fuel cell components, while the battery finds its place at the rear.

To ensure that this new model upholds the rugged reputation of the Hilux, Toyota intends to subject these 10 prototypes to rigorous testing. The company is gearing up for extensive assessments, covering safety, usability, and durability, in a bid to gain valuable insights into the strengths and weaknesses of a fuel cell-powered pickup.
