Toyota Unveils Hybrid Hilux in Kenya

Toyota showcased its Hilux MHEV (Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle) prototype during the seventh round of the World Rally Championship (WRC) held in Kenya this year. The company plans to launch this hybrid truck in 2024, equipped with a 48-volt mild hybrid system.
I firmly believe that this particular type of car is exceptionally well-suited for Africa, given the extensive long-distance drives and the significant challenges associated with charging electric vehicles. By opting for this vehicle, you can conserve fuel, leading to a substantial reduction in CO2 emissions. Considering Africa's burgeoning market, hybrid cars have the potential to play a pivotal role in minimizing carbon dioxide levels. Undoubtedly, they embody the future of transportation.  -Juha Kankkunen

Eye-Catching Design and Champion Driver

The Hilux MHEV prototype bears a striking resemblance to the Hilux Rogue model and is adorned with a bold livery displaying the word "HYBRID" in prominent letters. Toyota enlisted the expertise of Juha Kankkunen, a renowned Finnish four-time WRC champion and former Toyota world champion, to drive the Hilux MHEV prototype during the event.

Toyota's Multi-Pathway Plan for Carbon Neutrality

The introduction of the Hilux MHEV prototype aligns with Toyota's comprehensive approach to achieving carbon neutrality. As part of their multi-pathway plan, Toyota aims to develop various powertrain options to cater to market demands, including internal combustion engines, hybrids, plug-in hybrids, hydrogen fuel cells, and battery electric motors.

Key Features of the Hilux Mild Hybrid System

Toyota's Hilux mild hybrid system comprises a 48-volt battery, a compact electric motor generator, and other essential electric powertrain components. These components work in tandem with the existing 2.8-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder engine, which is paired with a six-speed automated transmission. The integration of the mild hybrid system is expected to enhance fuel efficiency by approximately 10% while maintaining the Hilux's renowned capabilities. Toyota also plans to offer this electrified powertrain in the Fortuner model, further expanding its hybrid lineup.
