Two Chinese Models Nominated for 2024 European Car Award

Out of the 28 nominees initially announced, two Chinese cars have emerged as finalists for the prestigious 2024 European Car of the Year award. The unveiling of the winner is scheduled for February 26, 2024, at the Geneva Motor Show.

Diverse Nominees and Strong Chinese Representation

Among the original 28 nominees, 7 were Chinese cars, marking the highest number from a single country and constituting a significant 25% of all contenders. In comparison, there were 5 Japanese, 5 German, 3 Korean, 1 American, and the remaining entries hailed from 6 different European automakers.

Chinese Influence in Smart #1 EV and Volvo EX30

Curiosity may arise regarding the classification of Smart #1 EV and Volvo EX30 as Chinese cars within the nominee pool. This designation stems from their foundation on a Chinese architecture (SEA) and the utilization of various Chinese components, such as batteries and e-motors. Notably, the mass production responsibility for these models lies with the Chinese company Geely Group.
