UK Exhibits First Self-Driving Bus Network

The Automated Bus Service

The operator of the world’s first automated local bus service claims that it will carry around 10,000 passengers per week on five single-deck buses over a 22.5-kilometer route. The buses will travel up to 80 km/h and will have a safety driver onboard, as UK law does not permit fully autonomous vehicles.

Driver Assistance System

The Advance Driver Assistance System (ADAS) of these buses uses optical cameras and radar to detect pedestrians, while the onboard system identifies other road users to avoid collisions. An artificial intelligence engine in the control system uses data from the bus to locate it and calculate the safest route.

Benefits of the New Service

After a test run near Edinburgh, Stagecoach bus service policy director Peter Stevens said that the autonomous technology on this bus has been tested before, but this is the first time it has been put on a bus that is now a registered local bus service. He promised that the new service would provide a safer, more fuel-efficient, and better customer experience.
