Upcoming Increase in Petrol Costs on September 15th

Motorists who hoped for a respite from rising petrol prices are in for a harsh reality check. On September 15th, petrol prices are poised to hit historic highs, shattering previous records and burdening consumers once more.

This startling turn of events follows a decision by the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) to boost profit margins for petroleum dealers and oil marketing corporations (OMCs).

The interim government has greenlit a substantial increase in profit margins for both petrol and diesel sales. Effective September 15th, fuel and diesel sale margins will surge by Rs3.5 per liter. This resolution was reached during a recent ECC meeting chaired by the Caretaker Finance Minister, Shamshad Akhtar.

OMCs will see their profit margins for fuel and diesel rise by Rs1.87 per liter, with an initial increment of Rs0.47 per liter scheduled for September 15th. This significant hike is expected to impact OMCs' operational costs, likely leading to higher prices for consumers.
Petrol and diesel traders are also set to benefit from an increase in their profit margins, with a Rs1.64 hike authorized. However, similar to OMCs, this increase will be phased in. Consumers can anticipate a Rs0.41 per liter rise for dealers on September 15th as part of the initial phase.

As of August 31, 2023, the government had already raised petrol prices by Rs. 14.91 per liter, pushing the new petrol price to Rs. 305.36, up from Rs. 290.45. Meanwhile, the high-speed diesel price (HSD) experienced a significant leap of Rs. 18.44 per liter, reaching Rs. 311.84 from Rs. 293.40.

In line with expectations, the Petroleum Development Levy (PDL) also saw an increase. The caretaker government implemented a maximum tax of Rs60 per liter on petrol, as reported by business journalist Shahbaz Rana.
