Volkswagen ID. GTI: Electric Hot Hatch Revolution

Volkswagen is gearing up to introduce an electric version of its iconic GTI badge with the upcoming ID. GTI, a hot hatch designed to deliver exhilarating driving experiences in an eco-friendly package. Scheduled for release in 2026, the ID. GTI is built on a new front-wheel-drive variant of the MEB platform, marking a significant step forward in VW's electrification efforts.

Prioritizing Handling Over Power
Unlike its gasoline-powered predecessors, the ID. GTI won't focus on sheer horsepower. VW's technical chief, Kai Grunitz, revealed that the electric GTI will likely produce less than 300 horsepower, possibly closer to 200. However, the emphasis is on "drivability" and creating a "real go-kart" feel, ensuring that the car remains engaging and fun to drive.

A Shift in Drive Configuration
The ID. GTI features a front-wheel-drive setup, a departure from the rear-wheel-drive configurations seen in many of VW's current ID models. This choice could enhance the car's agility and driver engagement, offering a playful driving experience that may have been lacking in previous electric models from Volkswagen.

Built on the ID.2 Platform
Interestingly, the ID. GTI is not based on the classic Golf platform but rather on the smaller ID.2 platform, which is similar in size to the Volkswagen Polo. This has raised questions about the car's potential availability in the U.S. market, where larger vehicles are generally more popular. Despite this, there are strong indications that Volkswagen is eager to bring the ID. GTI to American consumers.
