Xiaomi Expands Car Lineup with Two New Hybrid Models

Chinese tech giant Xiaomi is gearing up to broaden its footprint in the electric vehicle market by introducing two new models, one of which is a hybrid. This strategic move is designed to enhance sales and position Xiaomi as a significant player in China's rapidly evolving electric car industry.

The initial announcement of Xiaomi's venture into electric cars came last month with the revelation of its first model, the Xiaomi SU7, internally known as Modenat. Recent reports indicate that Xiaomi has more ambitious plans, with a total of three models in development.

The first two models, including Modena, will be battery electric vehicles (BEVs), underscoring Xiaomi's commitment to the electrification of transportation. These BEVs are anticipated to make their official debut next year, signifying a significant milestone in Xiaomi's automotive journey.

The third model, codenamed Kunlun, introduces an intriguing aspect to Xiaomi's strategy. While initial speculation hinted at an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV), Xiaomi has maintained secrecy regarding the specifics. As of November, Kunlun was progressing from conceptual design to the detailed design stage, leaving unanswered questions about its hybrid characteristics.

The uncertainty lies in whether Kunlun will be a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) or an EREV. Nevertheless, Xiaomi is strategically positioning it as the third product to tap into the growing demand for hybrid vehicles in the Chinese market.

China has experienced a surge in retail sales of new energy vehicles (NEVs), encompassing BEVs, hybrids, and fuel cell models. Sales in the first ten months of the year reached an impressive 5.96 million units, reflecting a 35% year-on-year increase. BEVs alone accounted for 4.0 million units, with hybrid vehicle sales surging by 83% to 1.96 million units. This robust growth positions hybrids as formidable contenders against traditional fuel vehicles.

Xiaomi's foray into the EV market with the SU7 marks a significant milestone after nearly three years of meticulous preparation. However, the company plans to expedite its car development process, aiming to unveil at least one new model every year. This accelerated pace underscores Xiaomi's dedication to staying competitive in the dynamic automotive landscape.

The SU7 has successfully navigated the necessary regulatory processes, hinting at an imminent official launch. Local media reports suggest that mass production is set to commence in December, with an official unveiling scheduled for February next year. Xiaomi's car factory in Beijing has been actively engaged in small-volume trial production, with dozens of vehicles already manufactured.
