Xiaomi SU7 Ultra Breaks EV Speed Record at Nürburgring

In a significant move into the electric vehicle (EV) market, Xiaomi, the world’s second-largest smartphone manufacturer, launched its first electric car, the Xiaomi SU7, in March 2024. The “SU” in SU7 stands for “Speed Ultra,” a name that Xiaomi has recently highlighted with an impressive achievement at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, one of the most challenging racetracks globally.

Record-Breaking Performance at Nürburgring
The SU7 Ultra prototype achieved a remarkable lap time of 6:46.874, officially making it the fastest four-door car on this prestigious track. However, Xiaomi’s path to this record was not without challenges. The company faced difficulties with the unpredictable Nürburgring weather, which disrupted their scheduled track slots in January and October. Rain caused delays on October 9 and 10, and further attempts on October 17 and 21 were also thwarted by sudden showers. Ultimately, on October 24, Nürburgring officials provided Xiaomi with a narrow one-hour window, during which the prototype successfully completed the record-setting lap on October 28.

Unveiling the SU7 Ultra Production Model
Following this milestone, Xiaomi unveiled the SU7 Ultra production model, a high-performance version of the SU7 sedan tailored for driving enthusiasts. This model was first introduced by Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun in his July address, signifying a new chapter in the company’s expansion into the EV market. The SU7 Ultra combines powerful performance with cutting-edge technology, promising an extraordinary driving experience.

Variants and Pricing
The original SU7, launched on March 28, is available in three versions—Standard, Pro, and Max—with prices ranging from RMB 215,900 ($30,200 USD) to RMB 299,900 ($42,000 USD). The SU7 Ultra production model, expected to be released in early 2025, is anticipated to be priced around RMB 800,000 ($112,000 USD) and will feature Xiaomi’s powerful V8 motor.

Performance Highlights
With a peak output of 1,138 kW (1,526 hp), the SU7 Ultra can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in just 1.97 seconds, reaching 200 km/h in under six seconds and boasting a top speed exceeding 350 km/h. David Pittard, the 2023 Nürburgring 24 Hours winner, was responsible for the record-breaking lap. While the lap time belongs to the prototype, the production SU7 Ultra is expected to retain its core features, marking Xiaomi’s electrifying entry into the high-performance EV market.
