2013-14 XLI make noise after driving

Hey everyone,

I just bought a 2013-14 XLI with 78k miles. It runs great, but I hear a noise after driving a bit, which mechanics say is likely from the valve lifters. I switched to Mobil1 5W-30 oil, but the noise continues at around 2k RPM.

Should I shim it, replace the lifters, o r rebuild the engine head? Any advice on costs? Thanks!

For your next oil change, please use 5W-30 engine oil from a reliable brand. Using 20W-50 oil for too long can cause varnish build-up and noisy VVTI, especially in the 2NZ-FE engine found in Toyota Corollas NZE120, 140, 170 from 2000 to 2020. Stick with 5W-30, and by your third oil change around 12,000 km, you should notice much less noise.
