Hi all,

I’m having some electrical issues with my Toyota Corolla, and I suspect the alternator might be the cause. The car occasionally loses power, and the electrical systems lights, radio flicker o r shut off when I’m driving. I’ve checked the battery, and it seems fine, so I’m leaning toward the alternator.

Has anyone else had this issue? What could be causing it, and how do I confirm it’s the alternator?

It sounds like your symptoms—losing power, flickering electrical systems, and radio shutting off—are consistent with alternator issues. Heres a step-by-step approach to confirm whether the alternator is the culprit:

Voltage Test: Use a multimeter to check the voltage at the battery terminals while the car is running. With the engine running, the voltage should typically be between 13.8 to 14.4 volts. If the reading is lower than 13.8 volts, your alternator may not be charging the battery correctly, which could explain the flickering lights and loss of power.

Battery Warning Light: Check if the battery warning light comes on. This light often illuminates when there’s a problem with the alternator o r charging system. If it turns on intermittently, its a strong indicator that your alternator might be struggling.

Check for Dimming Lights: If you notice that the headlights o r dashboard lights dim o r flicker when you’re driving, it’s another sign of alternator failure. The alternator is responsible for powering your cars electrical systems, so fluctuations in electrical power can be caused by a failing alternator.

Inspect the Alternator Belt: If the alternator belt is loose o r worn out, it can reduce the alternator’s efficiency. Inspect the belt for any signs of damage o r wear, and ensure it’s tight enough to turn the alternator properly.
