The water pump is responsible for circulating coolant through the engine and radiator. If it fails, coolant circulation stops, leading to engine overheating.
Signs of a failing water pump:

Leaking coolant from around the pump area.
Grinding o r squealing noises from the front of the engine.
Overheating: The engine temperature gauge may rise higher than normal.
Loss of coolant: If the pump is failing, coolant will not circulate properly, resulting in a lower coolant level.
