Santro: Nightmare
Santro: Nightmare
This is a letter I wrote to Dewan Farooq motors.. Moral of the story dont buy a locally made car.. even reconditioned are better..
Assalam-o-alaikum,
I am Dr. Muhammad Saqib, a customer of yours and a not-so-proud owner of a newly bought Santro Prime GV. I am writing these few lines not to irritate or embarrass you but in sheer frustration and despair. Frankly I don't expect much of a response from you people, but maybe it would lessen my tension if I voice it out. I just hope someone ears it as well.
I am a medical doctor by profession and have a very busy schedule. I bought a new car to have peace of mind and as I couldn't afford visits of workshop every now and then. Situation turned out exactly opposite.
I bought my Santro Prime GV on 9th September 2007 from authorized dealer of Dewan Farooq Motors (Hyundai Township Motors, Lahore). Problems started right there and then. When I started my car and checked for some gadgets the A.C. didn't work. I was told there's no gas (the air conditioner gas) in it which sometimes occurs in new cars. They charged it and it started working.
I initially ran it on Petrol only but when after some hundred kilometers I converted to CNG, it refused to run. Started missing severely and later it didn't even convert to CNG. I went to the same workshop and they fixed it (only partially so as it turned out later).
After few days the AC stopped working again. It was at around 1500 kms. I went to the workshop and they recharged AC gas (again). It started working again.
At around 2000 km: I noticed the left parking lights were not lighting up. The Second gear started sticking as if something hindering it. The drivers seat started quaking. The car also started switching off all by itself when converting to CNG and while stopped for example on a red light (only while on CNG). On a highway maximum speed it reached on CNG was around 80 km/hr (!!!). Also the handbrakes were so useless that I could push and roll my car while hand brakes fully applied and it rolled on slightest slope. I had no choice but to waste my valuable time on visits to workshop (exactly what I wanted to avoid). They advised me a handbrake adjustment, a gear fluid check, a fuse change, oiling for the seat quake and CNG adjustment. As you might be knowing 'adjustments' are not covered in warranty neither are lights and fuses (well that's another story). The CNG adjustment improved it but not fully cured it. The parking lights cost me three visits to workshop as changing fuse didn't help it. Finally they found a short circuit in the back door panel which resolved the problem. Seat quake also took two visits as on the first visit I was told that the seat needs to be removed and fixed somehow and later it resolved on careful oiling (or whatever that spray was). Handbrakes were very efficiently adjusted (bravo). The gear for me is still very hard and sticky but the workshop people refused to admit it.
The AC again troubled me and started having an off and on phenomenon. The workshop people initially refused any problem in it but then changed some part which they claimed caused leak of the AC gas. Its working alright now (I can just hope it keeps on doing so).
Just as I left workshop after getting my car AC fixed it started heating up while AC on. I tried running it on highway but still kept on heating. It improved on switching AC off but not resolved fully. I went to the workshop again where they refused to admit it heated up. Well it really didn't heat up on my way back home even with AC on. It did the same thing again, heated up with or without AC specially while running on 90 km/hr or more without stops. I decided to change the workshop. I went to the Hyundai Central Motors, Lahore. They checked it with a device attached to wiring below the steering and declared the wiring is defective and needs to be changed. The man told me to go to the shop I bought it from (Hyundai Township Motors) and get it claimed as its under warranty.
So just after 4000 kms, only 2 months, and already atleast eight visits to workshop am I regretting my decision to go for a Santro rather than a Mehran, well you tell me should I? And the thing that bothers me the most is the PDI (pre-delivery inspection, quality check) sticker on the wind shield. Santro for me is a nightmare that never ends.
I know it doesn't make any difference to you as long as your cars keep on selling and you keep on getting the profit. Keep enjoying.

Thanks for sharing that, your letter has been very informative adn useful to me and I pray you get a better car that will meet your citeria rather than going through more hassles. Good luck bhai.
