Toyota Corolla Overheating on Highways – Not in City Driving?
Hi everyone,
My Corolla seems to overheat only on highway drives, but it runs fine in city traffic. Could this be due to a clogged radiator, failing thermostat, o r weak water pump?
What should I check first before taking it to a mechanic? Any DIY solutions?
Looking forward to your suggestions!

If your Corolla is overheating on highway drives but runs fine in city traffic, it could be due to several factors. A clogged radiator o r failing thermostat might not cause issues in low-speed driving but could be problematic at higher speeds where the engine needs more cooling. A weak water pump could also struggle to circulate coolant effectively at higher speeds, leading to overheating.
To troubleshoot, start by checking the coolant levels and condition. If the coolant is low o r looks dirty, consider flushing the radiator. Inspect the thermostat by testing its operation—if it’s stuck closed, it will prevent proper coolant flow. Lastly, check the radiator for any blockages o r leaks, and test the water pump for signs of failure, such as low coolant circulation o r unusual noises.
If these steps don’t resolve the issue, it might be time to consult a mechanic.
