Toyota Corolla Rough Idle – What’s the Fix?
Toyota Corolla Rough Idle – What’s the Fix?
Hi everyone,
I’ve noticed that my Toyota Corolla has a rough idle when I’m at a stoplight o r parked. The RPM fluctuates slightly, and sometimes the car vibrates more than usual. I recently cleaned the throttle body and replaced the air filter, but the issue remains.
Has anyone else experienced rough idling in their Corolla? Could it be an issue with the fuel injectors o r something else?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Hey sandeep!
I can understand how annoying a rough idle can be, especially when youve already taken steps like cleaning the throttle body and replacing the air filter. Since the issue persists, here are a few other possible causes to check:
Dirty o r Failing Idle Air Control Valve IACV – The IACV helps regulate the engine’s idle speed. If it’s dirty o r malfunctioning, it can cause fluctuations in RPM and rough idling. Cleaning o r replacing it might help.
Vacuum Leaks – A leak in the intake manifold o r vacuum hoses can lead to an uneven air-fuel mixture, causing rough idling. You can check for hissing sounds under the hood o r use a smoke test to detect leaks.
Faulty Mass Airflow MAF Sensor – If the MAF sensor is dirty o r failing, it can send incorrect readings to the ECU, affecting the air-fuel mixture and causing rough idling. Try cleaning it with MAF sensor cleaner.
Bad Spark Plugs o r Ignition Coils – Even if they seem fine, old o r faulty spark plugs and ignition coils can cause rough idling and misfires. If they haven’t been replaced recently, it might be worth checking them.
Fuel Injector Issues – A clogged o r failing fuel injector can cause uneven fuel delivery, leading to rough idling. Running a fuel injector cleaner through the system o r getting them professionally cleaned could help.
Engine o r Transmission Mounts – If the mounts are worn out, the vibrations may feel like a rough idle, even if the engine is running properly. Checking for excessive engine movement can help diagnose this issue.
Since youve already cleaned the throttle body and replaced the air filter, I’d recommend checking for vacuum leaks and scanning for any hidden trouble codes with an OBD-II scanner, even if there’s no check engine light.
Hope this helps! Let us know what you find! 🚗🔧
