Toyota Corolla Starter Motor Issues – Could It Be the Ignition Switch Instead?

Hi everyone,

My Corolla sometimes refuses to start, but other times, it works fine. I suspect the starter motor, but I’ve also heard that a faulty ignition switch can cause similar problems.

How can I tell if it’s the starter motor o r the ignition switch causing the issue? Any simple tests to confirm?

If your Corolla sometimes refuses to start, but other times it works fine, it could indeed be an issue with either the starter motor o r the ignition switch. Here are some simple tests you can perform to help identify the cause:

Check for clicking sound: When you turn the key, listen for a clicking sound. If you hear a single click o r multiple rapid clicks, it could indicate a problem with the starter motor o r solenoid. If theres no sound at all, it could point to an issue with the ignition switch o r the starter motor wiring.

Test the battery: Ensure that your battery is fully charged and in good condition. Weak batteries can cause intermittent starting issues. If the battery is low o r old, it could affect both the ignition switch and the starter motor.

Ignition switch test:
When the car doesn’t start, try turning the key to the on position and jiggle the key slightly. If the dashboard lights flicker o r go out, the ignition switch might be failing.
If the car starts when you hold the key in a specific position, its likely the ignition switch thats malfunctioning.

Starter motor test: If you hear the clicking sound but the engine doesn’t turn over, the starter motor may be the culprit. You can also try tapping the starter motor lightly with a hammer while someone else turns the key to start. If this causes the car to start, the starter motor is likely faulty and needs replacement.

Inspect the ignition switch wiring: Look for any damaged o r loose wires around the ignition switch. A broken connection could cause the starting issue intermittently.

If these tests point to the ignition switch, it may need to be replaced. If the starter motor is the issue, you’ll likely need to replace it as well. In any case, its recommended to have a mechanic perform a more thorough diagnosis if youre unsure.
