Toyota Corolla Worn Brake Pads – When to Replace?

Toyota Corolla Worn Brake Pads – When to Replace?

Hey everyone,

I’ve been hearing a squeaking noise when braking in my Toyota Corolla, and I suspect my brake pads might be worn out. How can I tell if it’s time to replace them? Is there a specific thickness I should check for?

Also, any recommendations on good replacement brake pads for daily driving?

A squeaking noise when braking is often a sign that your brake pads are wearing down and may need replacement. Most brake pads have wear indicators that produce a high-pitched squeal when the pad material gets too thin. You can visually inspect your brake pads by looking through the wheel spokes o r removing the wheel for a closer look. If the pad thickness is less than 3mm, it’s time to replace them.

Other signs of worn brake pads include longer stopping distances, a spongy brake pedal, o r a grinding noise, which indicates the pads have worn down completely, potentially damaging the rotors.

For daily driving, ceramic brake pads are a good option as they offer quieter operation, less dust, and longer lifespan compared to semi-metallic pads. Brands like Akebono, Bosch, Wagner, and OEM Toyota pads are reliable choices. If you prefer more braking power, semi-metallic pads provide better performance but may generate more dust and noise.

Regular inspections and timely replacements can help maintain braking performance and prevent costly repairs.
