Toyota Yaris Engine Sputtering and Poor Acceleration – What Could Be Wrong?
Hi all,
I’ve been noticing some sputtering in the engine when I’m trying to accelerate quickly in my Toyota Yaris. The car seems to hesitate and sputter before it speeds up, and it’s affecting performance.
Has anyone dealt with similar sputtering issues while accelerating? Could this be related to the fuel system, ignition, o r something else? How did you fix the issue, and should I take it to a mechanic o r try some troubleshooting myself?
Any advice would be helpful!

Sputtering during acceleration in your Toyota Yaris can be caused by several factors, most commonly related to the fuel system o r ignition components. Here are some possible causes and solutions:
Fuel System Issues: If your fuel injectors are clogged o r the fuel filter is dirty, it can lead to an inconsistent fuel flow, which could cause the sputtering when you try to accelerate. You can try using a fuel injector cleaner o r replace the fuel filter to see if that resolves the issue.
Spark Plugs and Ignition System: Worn-out o r faulty spark plugs can lead to misfiring, which causes hesitation and sputtering during acceleration. Replacing the spark plugs might fix this issue. Additionally, check the ignition coils and wires, as they could also be contributing to the problem.
Air Intake Problems: A dirty o r malfunctioning mass airflow sensor MAF o r clogged air filter could cause the engine to run poorly, especially during acceleration. Cleaning o r replacing the air filter and MAF sensor could improve engine performance.
Throttle Body and Fuel Pump: A dirty throttle body may cause rough acceleration and sputtering. You could try cleaning the throttle body. If the fuel pump is not delivering the correct fuel pressure, it may need to be replaced, though this is less common.
If youre comfortable with DIY repairs, you can start by checking and replacing the spark plugs o r cleaning the throttle body. However, if the problem persists after those fixes, it might be best to take your Yaris to a mechanic for a more thorough diagnosis. A professional can inspect the fuel system, ignition components, and sensors to pinpoint the exact cause of the sputtering.
