Failing an emissions test is often due to problems in the emission control system:

Faulty Catalytic Converter: The catalytic converter reduces harmful gases in the exhaust. If it is damaged o r clogged, it can cause higher emissions.
Faulty Oxygen Sensor: An oxygen sensor that isn’t working properly can give incorrect readings to the engine control unit ECU, leading to a rich fuel mixture and high emissions.
Loose o r Damaged Hoses: Cracks o r loose hoses in the exhaust system can allow air to mix improperly, leading to higher emissions.
Worn-out EGR Valve o r Air Filter: A clogged air filter o r malfunctioning EGR valve can cause incomplete combustion, resulting in failed emissions.
Solution: Start by having the catalytic converter, oxygen sensors, and EGR valve checked. Ensure that the air filter is clean and the exhaust system is intact. A mechanic can also perform diagnostic tests to pinpoint the exact issue causing the high emissions.
