Why do my Khybers dashboard lights keep going out at night?
Sometimes while driving at night, the dashboard lights on my Khyber suddenly go off o r flicker. I’ve replaced the bulbs, but the issue keeps returning. Is this a wiring issue o r a fuse-related problem?

1. Faulty Dimmer Switch o r Rheostat
The Khyber has a dimmer control usually a dial o r slider that adjusts dashboard brightness.
If its faulty, worn, o r stuck in a dimmed/off position, the dash lights may cut out o r flicker, especially when the headlights are turned on.
✅ Fix: Test o r replace the dimmer/rheostat. You can also bypass it entirely by rewiring the dash light circuit directly.
2. Blown Dashboard Light Bulbs
Over time, the small bulbs behind your speedometer and gauges burn out, especially in older cars like the Khyber.
If all o r most of them go out at once, it may look like the entire dashboard went dark.
✅ Fix: Remove the instrument cluster and replace the tiny backlight bulbs. Use LED replacements for longer life if youre up for a minor upgrade.
3. Wiring o r Grounding Issues
Loose o r corroded ground wires can cause intermittent power loss to the dash lights.
This gets worse at night when you turn on the headlights, which puts more load on the circuit.
✅ Fix: Check and clean the ground points under the dashboard. Look for any frayed o r burnt wires behind the instrument cluster.
4. Bad Headlight Switch
The headlight switch also controls power to the dashboard lighting. If its failing internally, it can cut power to the dash lights when you turn on your headlights at night.
✅ Fix: Replace the headlight switch — a used o r new one is usually affordable for a Khyber.
5. Fuse Issues
The dashboard lights are usually on the same circuit as other small lighting systems.
A blown fuse o r poor fuse contact could cause the dash lights to stop working.
✅ Fix: Check the fuse labeled something like Cluster, Dash, o r Illumination in the fuse box usually under the dashboard o r near the battery.
6. Alternator o r Battery Voltage Problems
Low voltage o r unstable power from a weak battery o r alternator can cause electronics like dash lights to flicker o r turn off.
✅ Fix: Test the battery and alternator. If the voltage is dipping under load like when headlights and AC are on, you might need a replacement o r repair.
⚙️ Quick Diagnosis Tip:
Try lightly tapping near the dashboard o r dimmer switch when the lights go out. If they flicker o r turn back on briefly, it’s almost certainly a loose wire o r bad switch.
