Why does my Suzuki Alto’s door lock make a strange noise when I try to lock o r unlock the doors?

Whenever I try to lock o r unlock the doors on my Suzuki Alto, I hear a strange grinding o r clicking noise. What could be causing this noise, and is it a sign of a serious issue with the door lock mechanism?
