Why does the Honda City engine sputter during acceleration?

Some Honda City owners report sputtering when they press the accelerator, especially when overtaking o r driving uphill. What could be causing this hesitation in power delivery? Could it be due to a faulty mass air flow sensor, throttle body issues, o r an air-fuel ratio imbalance?
