200% Surge in Traffic Violation Penalties Nationwide

The National Highway and Motorway Police (NHMP) have recently declared the enforcement of a substantial 200% surge in Traffic Violation Fines across all highways in Pakistan. This decision, initiated in October 2023, aimed to curb violations and diminish road accidents. The revised fines, implemented from October 1, 2023, feature notable adjustments in penalties for various traffic offenses.

New Traffic Rules Across the Country

The NHMP has introduced seven new traffic rules applicable nationwide. Notably, fines for overspeeding have been elevated to Rs. 2500 from the previous Rs. 750, while the penalty for wrong turns has increased to Rs. 1500 from Rs. 300. Vehicles with broken or non-functional headlights now face a fine of Rs. 5,000, a significant rise from the previous Rs. 500.

Revised Challan Rates for Driving Offenses

The revised challan rate for rash and careless driving stands at Rs. 1500, compared to the previous Rs. 300. Driving without a Driving License will now incur a fine of Rs. 5,000, up from Rs. 750, and the fine for vehicles with fancy number plates has been set at Rs. 1,000, with HID lights incurring a Rs. 2,000 penalty. Additionally, individuals driving cars without registration will face a Rs. 2,000 fine, a substantial increase from the previous Rs. 500.

Implementation Across Highways

According to an NHMP spokesperson, the implementation of these fines occurred in two stages. Initially, they were imposed solely on cars and jeeps, specifically on motorways starting October 1, 2023. In the second phase, effective January 1, 2024, the fines have been completely implemented in the areas of responsibility (AOR) of NHMP, covering all major highways in the country.

Drive Safely to Avoid Strict Penalties

The public is advised to exercise caution and adhere to traffic rules diligently to avoid the now rigorously enforced fines. These fines are applicable at all major highways, urging drivers to prioritize careful and safe driving practices.

Recent Increase in Toll Tax

This development coincides with the Punjab government's decision to increase the toll tax on the Lahore Ring Road by 20%, a development detailed separately.
