Affordable Chinese EVs Transforming Asia and South America
China's commitment to electric vehicles (EVs) extends beyond its borders, as Chinese automakers make significant strides in dominating the global EV market. From government support to tangible results, China's influence is spreading worldwide.
South Asian and South American Triumph
Chinese EVs lead the charts in various South Asian and South American countries, according to JATO Dynamics. In the first half of 2023, China claimed substantial market shares: 29% in Indonesia, 33% in the Philippines, 28% in Malaysia, and an impressive 79% in Thailand. In South America, Brazil and Chile each saw 27% of their new EV sales attributed to Chinese brands.
North American Success
Even in North America, Chinese EVs are gaining ground. In Mexico, in the first half of 2023 came from Chinese firms. Meanwhile, a staggering 91% of new electric vehicle sales in Russia during the same period were Chinese, as many legacy automakers withdrew due to the Ukraine conflict.
Chinese EVs' Competitive Edge
Chinese EVs' popularity can be attributed to their affordability and resilience to supply chain constraints, a challenge faced by traditional automakers. In just eight years, China reversed the price trend, with the average EV now priced at $33,404 in China, compared to $71,669 in Europe and $72,912 in the US.
Quality and Technology Leadership
Chinese automakers, including Xpeng, Nio, BYD, and MG, have elevated the quality and technological appeal of their EVs. With prices lower than their European counterparts, Chinese EVs with 200-300 hp are becoming common sights on the streets of select European countries and North America.
Marchionne's Warning Echoes
The late Sergio Marchionne's warning about the rise of Chinese automakers resonates today. He foresaw the "enormous" risk posed by Chinese autos to established car makers in Europe and North America. As Chinese automakers eye global exports, the competition is intensifying, urging Western car manufacturers to fortify their industrial bases for the inevitable challenges ahead.
