BYD Unveils the Dolphin EV in Malaysia

BYD officially introduces the Dolphin EV in Malaysia as the latest addition to their product lineup for this market, following the successful release of the Atto 3 in December 2022. The Dolphin electric hatchback is available in two versions for Malaysian customers: the Standard Range and the Extended Range.

The Standard Range model is equipped with a single electric motor that generates up to 95 hp (70 kW) of power and 180 Nm of torque. It boasts a respectable acceleration, achieving 0 to 100 km/h in 12.3 seconds. The vehicle is powered by a 44.9 kWh BYD Blade battery pack, granting it a maximum range of 340 km on a full charge. Charging options include a 7 kW AC charger integrated into the vehicle and support for up to 60 kW DC fast charging.

In contrast, the Extended Range model of the Dolphin EV features a larger 60.48 kWh battery, significantly improving the WLTP range to 427 km and enhancing acceleration to 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.0 seconds. It also shares the same 7 kW AC charger as the standard version but offers faster DC fast charging of up to 80 kW. Additionally, the Extended Range variant comes with a multi-link suspension for enhanced performance compared to the standard model's torsion beam system.

Both Dolphin variants come equipped with automatic LED headlamps featuring High Beam Assist, LED DRLs, LED taillights, electrically heated and adjustable side mirrors, keyless entry and start, automatic air-conditioning with a PM2.5 air filter, a 5-inch digital instrument cluster, synthetic leather upholstery, and a 12.8-inch rotating touchscreen infotainment system. Wired Apple CarPlay support, navigation, 6 speakers, and an electronic parking brake are also included in the standard equipment.

For added convenience and luxury, the Premium Extended Range version further adds features such as a panoramic glass roof, a wireless phone charger, powered front seats with ventilation function, rear LED reading lights, and one-touch up-down functionality for all windows. Additionally, the Premium version upgrades to 17-inch wheels, whereas the Standard version features 16-inch wheels.

Regarding safety and driver assistance features, both Dolphin models are nearly identical. They come equipped with standard passive systems like ABS, ESC, traction control, and EBD, as well as 6 airbags (front, side, and curtain), a tire pressure monitoring system, parking sensors (two front, three rear), and door open alerts.

As for pricing, the BYD Dolphin is competitively priced at RM99,900 ($22,065) for the Standard Range model, while the Extended Range model is available at RM124,900 ($27,580). With its impressive features, the Dolphin EV is set to make a significant impact on the electric vehicle market in Malaysia.
