M-Tagged Vehicles Get Toll Tax Discount

Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan emphasized the promotion of M-Tag and announced a forthcoming discount for M-Tag holders aimed at alleviating congestion at toll plazas. Addressing the Senate Standing Committee on Communications, chaired by Pervez Rasheed, Khan highlighted ongoing efforts to mitigate traffic congestion and long queues at toll points across motorways and highways.

During the session, Khan pointed out that despite 42 percent of Pakistan’s road network being in Balochistan, there is currently no toll plaza in the province. This absence poses challenges to the maintenance and development of roads in the region. Similarly, in Gilgit-Baltistan, which boasts 900 kilometers of roads, only one toll plaza serves the entire area.

Regarding revenue generation, Khan disclosed that toll tax collection amounted to Rs. 60 billion last year and is projected to surpass Rs. 100 billion. This increase reflects the growing usage of highways and motorways across the country.

The committee was also briefed on the vehicle demographics in Pakistan, with approximately 38 million vehicles registered nationwide. Motorcycles constitute 70 percent of this fleet, while there are 2.7 million large vehicles, of which 70 percent are categorized as old.
