Mercedes Shows New Electric G-Class

Mercedes-Benz is set to revolutionize its iconic G-Class by introducing an all-electric variant, and according to CEO Ola Kaellenius, this electric version could potentially outperform its traditional counterpart in off-road capabilities. In a recent outdoor video featuring the electric G-Class, Kaellenius and chief engineer Fabian Schossau provided insights into the vehicle's development and distinctive features. This move comes four years after Mercedes-Benz initially announced the development of an electric G-Class, keeping much of it under wraps until now.

The electric G-Wagon maintains the characteristic boxy silhouette that is instantly recognizable as a true G-Class, as proudly stated by Kaellenius. While the prototype in the video was camouflaged, Mercedes-Benz had previously revealed the Concept EQG in 2021, offering a preview of the essential design elements.

For rigorous testing, the development team chose the Schoeckl mountain in Graz, Austria—the birthplace of the G-Class. The electric off-roader underwent a demanding regimen, ascending and descending the mountain 336 times, showcasing its off-road capabilities. The innovative drivetrain concept features four electric motors, one at each wheel, with smart software managing torque distribution, enabling impressive off-road maneuvers, including a G-turn.

Mercedes is not only emphasizing off-road capabilities but also pushing boundaries in battery technology. The electric G-Class will feature a state-of-the-art silicon anode battery, expected to enhance energy density by 20 to 40% compared to conventional lithium-ion batteries. This advancement has the potential to significantly extend the vehicle's range, a crucial factor for electric off-roaders.

Known for its ruggedness and cult following, the G-Class's electric variant raises considerable interest by potentially matching or surpassing the traditional model in off-road capabilities. This signifies a notable shift towards electrification in the automotive landscape without compromising performance.

Addressing concerns from purists, Kaellenius assures that the traditional Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) version of the G-Class will continue alongside the electric variant. This dual approach ensures that fans of the iconic off-roader can still enjoy the powerful experience of a gasoline engine.

While the exact release date for the electric Mercedes-Benz G-Class remains undisclosed, industry speculation points to a potential market arrival in 2024, likely as a 2025 model-year offering.
