Motorway Police Increases Penalties for Various Violations
The recent decision by the National Highways & Motorways Police (NHMP) to substantially hike fines for various traffic violations has sparked debate and raised concerns among the public. The increased fines, effective from January 1, target offenses such as over-speeding, driving without a helmet, and the use of HID lights.
One of the notable changes involves the fine for using HID lights, which has skyrocketed from Rs. 300 to Rs. 2,000. This drastic increase of 1,700 rupees is aimed at deterring drivers from using these lights, emphasizing the NHMP's commitment to road safety.
Motorcyclists engaging in risky behaviors, such as performing stunts, now face a hefty Rs. 5,000 fine, a significant jump from the previous Rs. 300 penalty. Similarly, the fine for driving without a helmet has surged to Rs. 1,000, compared to the previous Rs. 200, signaling a stricter approach to helmet enforcement.
Passenger vehicles exceeding the prescribed passenger limit will be slapped with a Rs. 5,000 fine, up from the earlier Rs. 1,500 penalty. This move aims to discourage overcrowding and enhance safety measures within vehicles.
The fines for over-speeding vary across vehicle types, with motorcycles facing a Rs. 1,500 penalty, cars at Rs. 2,500, passenger vehicles at Rs. 10,000, and HTVs at Rs. 5,000. While the NHMP justifies these increases as crucial for promoting road safety and ensuring compliance with traffic regulations, critics argue that the steep fines may disproportionately affect low-income individuals and call for a balanced approach that considers the economic realities of citizens. As the new fines come into effect, it remains to be seen how they will impact driving behavior and overall road safety in the long run.
