Punjab Govt Buys Cars Worth Rs. 2.33 Billion
Pakistan is grappling with severe economic difficulties, narrowly escaping bankruptcy with a $3 billion loan approved by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). However, amidst this financial crisis, the Punjab caretaker government appears indifferent as it allocates a staggering Rs. 2.33 billion to acquire more than 200 new vehicles for government officials and bureaucrats.
Social Media Claims and Their Verification
Speculations about this extravagant vehicle purchase have been circulating on social media, with some users questioning the government's decision in the face of the country's dire economic situation. While some doubted the authenticity of these claims, a prominent private news channel in Pakistan has verified them to be true through fact-checking.
Details of the Controversial Purchase
According to an anonymous senior government official, the province's additional commissions will receive Toyota Corolla 1.6 Altis CVT each, while the additional deputy commissioners (ADCs) of each district will be provided with a Yaris ATIV 1.3L. Additionally, the assistant commissioners (ACs) of each tehsil will be given a luxury double cabin 4X4 Revo-G. The purchase amounts to a significant financial burden on the provincial exchequer.
Source of Funding and Beneficiaries
The Punjab Board of Revenue (BOR) will finance the acquisition of these 209 new vehicles, drawing from the budget allocated for 2023-24. The beneficiaries of these vehicles include 146 assistant commissioners (tehsil), 36 additional deputy commissioners (district), and 27 additional commissioners (division).
