Toyota Corolla Tops Global Sales Once Again

Toyota Corolla Tops Global Sales Once Again
Japanese automotive giant Toyota recently announced a significant achievement, surpassing the production of over 300 million automobiles since its inception in 1935. This remarkable feat positions Toyota as the first automaker to reach such a monumental milestone.
Diverse Portfolio Across Brands
The impressive production figure encompasses all brands under the Toyota umbrella, including Toyota, Daihatsu, Lexus, and Hino. In contrast, Toyota's closest competitor, the Volkswagen Auto Group of Germany, trails with approximately 200 million units.
Corolla Dominates Sales Charts
Among Toyota's successful models, the Corolla stands out with the highest sales. Cumulatively, Toyota Corolla sales have reached an impressive 53.399 million units. This includes various Corolla iterations, such as the JDM-spec (Axio), the Corolla hatchback & estate, and the Corolla Cross.
Corolla's Remarkable Contribution
The Corolla constitutes about 18% (17.79%, precisely) of Toyota's total production since 1935. It holds the distinction of being the longest-running nameplate in the brand's history and the only car globally to surpass the 50 million units milestone. The closest contender, the Ford F-series, has sold over 43 million units to date.
Corolla's Swift Sales Acceleration
Remarkably, the Corolla achieved the 50 million units sales mark in August 2021, a feat accomplished within a relatively short time span since its production commencement in 1966. With nearly 3.39 million units sold in just a couple of years, statistics estimate that a Toyota Corolla is sold approximately every 28 seconds globally.
Looking Towards the Future
Currently in its 12th generation since its debut in November 2018, the Corolla is slated for a 13th generation model in the coming year. As the automotive industry transitions into the era of electrification, it remains to be seen how the Toyota Corolla will evolve to compete against the rising tide of electric vehicles. Notably, the Tesla Model Y surpassed the Corolla as the world's bestselling car in Q1 of this year, hinting at potential challenges for the Corolla in the evolving automotive landscape. The upcoming 13th generation model will provide insights into Toyota's strategy in adapting to this changing landscape.
